Ohhhhh those eyes, Ummm that smile, ohhh those rippling muscles…..he is definitely bringing SEXY back to the world of daytime! No my dears I am not talking about Justin Timberlake, even though I would like to see him on daytime, I am talking about the dashing and very witty Colin Egglesfield, who has played the role of Josh Madden on the alphabet networks, All My Children since joining the cast in August 2005.

“I am having such a great time with this character and all his dimensions,” says Egglesfield with enthusiasm in his voice. He adds “I LOVE working on this show and being part of this stellar cast.”

And becoming a cast member on this long running show was simply “fate” as Egglesfield puts it. What does Egglesfield mean by fate when it comes to his daytime character? “As the fans know, I was certainly not the first actor to originate the role of Josh,” he says. He adds, “I do not know the circumstances that surrounded the show wishing to recast the character Josh, I had done some films and primetime and auditioned for this role in Los Angeles, much against the advice of my agents ….All I know is that a second audition came out for the role and I was auditioning for the role of Kevin Sturgess, this time in New York…I was on a trip with my brother when Julie Carruthers called and well here I am.”

Even though viewers were beginning to warm up to the character of Josh, they were shocked when Egglesfield took over the role. “In the beginning a lot of viewers said that they did not like me in the role and that they liked the other Josh better,” he says. “They (the viewers) wanted to know what happened to the other Josh and why I was suddenly brought into the role….it’s been really cool to see how the fans have slowly and gradually warmed up to me in the role.”

And how could any viewer not warm up to Egglesfield, since he had been cast in front burner storylines since joining the show. “I have been a doctor, lawyer, businessman….you name it I have probably done it so far on this show,” Egglesfield says with a laugh. 

The one aspect of this show that he has thoroughly enjoyed has been the opportunity to work with daytime grand dame, Susan Lucci. “WOW…..that is one of the words I can use to describe it.” “She is an amazing woman and a true professional,” he says with the utmost admiration.

And how better to get to know a co-star than to be thrust into an emotional and in this case history changing storyline with them? “When I first auditioned for the role of Josh, he was just a character on a piece of paper……no one knew that he was ultimately going to be revealed to be the son of Erica Kane and Jeff Martin,” shares Egglesfield. 

But the secret was revealed and it seemed as if everyone in Pine Valley knew Josh’s true lineage……..everyone that is but Josh. “Every time I would get my script I would read to see if Josh was actually going to find out the truth that week,” Egglesfield says with a laugh. 

“To be quite honest, it got VERY frustrating at times because EVERYONE but Josh knew the truth….I was like can he find out please,” he continues with another laugh. Finally, Josh learned the truth, began to make amends with his biological mother, and wrestled with a multitude emotions. 

And at the center of that multitude of emotions happens to be blonde bombshell, Babe Carey Chandler. “Josh loves Babe…bottom line,” says Egglesfield. However, inquiring minds want to know whether or not Babe and Josh will indeed end up together? “You know that is a VERY good question,” responds Egglesfield with a sly hint in his voice.

“I do think that Babe has feelings for Josh, but she continues to push him away…push him out of her life for the sake of her marriage and her son,” Egglesfield says with a sigh. But if Babe and Josh ended up together would their love have a chance of surviving?

“Not if the Kane/Montgomery women have any say so in the matter,” he says with a laugh. “I think Erica, Kendall and Bianca would do whatever they could to keep these two apart.”

I asked Egglesfield who he would like to see Josh paired with if a love connection did not happen between his character and Babe. “I would’ve liked to have seen the powers that be test the waters and see if something could’ve happened between Erin (Lavery) and Josh,” he says. He continues with a laugh, “You know I think that deep down there is an attraction between Josh and Amanda Dillon….how interesting would it be to see if beneath all the hate these two have for each other if love was actually present.”

Quickly I mentioned the fact that Colin oozed chemistry with fellow co-star, Sydney Penny who plays the role of nurse Julia Santos Keefer. I told him that I had hoped that the show might have moved Josh and Julia into each other’s orbits much to the chagrin of Julia’s love Jamie Martin, who happens to be the cousin of Josh Madden. 

“That would’ve been an interesting pairing,” Egglesfield says. “At times I thought that they might indeed test the waters with a pairing between Julia and Josh.” But alas, that never happened. Nurse Julia remained in the arms of Jamie, while Josh was down on his luck in the relationship department….the relationship of love that is.

Even though his character has been unlucky in the relationship department with Babe, Egglesfield is enjoying some other blossoming relationships that Josh is having. “I LOVE the sibling bonding that is going on between Josh, Kendall and Bianca and I look forward to it progressing even more,” he says. 

Of course I had to ask Egglesfield what it was like to work with onscreen sisters, Alicia Minshew and Eden Riegel. “Alicia is a PHENOMENAL actress,” he shares. “Kendall and Josh have a deeper bond because they both know what it is like to all of a sudden discover that you are the long lost child of Erica Kane.”

At the time of this interview, Egglesfield was beginning to work with other onscreen sis, Eden Riegel who had just returned to the role and the show that helped launch her daytime career. “Eden is GREAT to work with,” he shares.  “I am looking forward to getting to know her better and to see where the sibling relationship goes between Bianca and Josh.”

So while working on those sibling relationships, not to mention the relationship with his newly discovered mother and father I asked Egglesfield which last name Josh would retain: Kane or Martin? “Hmm that is a good question,” he says with his interest piqued. “Joshua Kane certainly has a nice ring to it, but Josh Martin isn’t bad either,” he says with a laugh. “I guess viewers will have to wait and see which family Josh bonds with more.”

But Josh may not take Martin or Kane as his last name, but keep Madden instead. After all, Greg Madden was a HUGE part of Josh’s life. “Greg was the one that encouraged Josh to go to medical school…Josh wanted to impress his dad so.”

Josh admired Greg the same way Egglesfield admired former onscreen father Ian Buchanan. “What can I not say about Ian……he was a great mentor and is an even greater friend,” Egglesfield shares. “He taught me quite a bit about daytime while he was on the show and I do miss him since he has left.”  

So does Egglesfield still stay in touch with Buchanan? “You bet I do,” he says enthusiastically.  

Colin Egglesfield…this Illinois native is making his home and finding success in the Big Apple, but in his own words he “could not do it with out the support of the fans.”  Welcome to daytime Mr. Egglesfield you have certainly brought SEXY BACK.
