VIEW FROM THE VALLEY

Coming to an end….

And that seems to be the scenario for Pine Valley silver haired fox Adam Chandler and his portrayer David Canary.

I’ve always heard the saying “All good things must come to an end,” and while those endings in our lives occur at times they seem to open the doors or windows to new opportunities that are waiting in the wings.

This Friday night the saying above will be one that I put into my “quote book,” as I retire from my coaching career that has spanned 10 years.

I sit here with mixed emotions, sad that a HUGE chunk of my life will now be non-existent but excited to see just what exactly is in the cards with my future. Fortunately, I will still be in contact with many of the students I’ve coached, as I will see them on a daily basis this time as a high school counselor and not as their coach.

I guess that is why I can relate to the plethora of emotions that All My Children veteran cast member David Canary is probably feeling at this point.  It’s hard to believe that Pine Valley will be without Adam Chandler when Canary leaves the role of Adam Chandler, as rumored in March 2010.

From the moment it was confirmed that All My Kids was indeed moving it’s studio from Manhattan in New York to the sand and surf of Los Angeles, many rumors and whispers began to fly regarding which cast members would stick with the show and relocate to the west coast and which would say their fond farewells to their cast mates, friends and fans.

Someone claiming to be the daughter of David Canary (note: he does indeed have a daughter named Kate in real life) posted on her twitter account that he was sticking with the show (albeit commuting) long enough to wrap up his current storyline and fulfill his contractual obligations to ABC and All My Children. From the moment this “whisper” was posted, daytime viewers lit up soap opera message boards wondering if it was indeed true and what exactly would become of Adam Chandler.

Would the network actually be stupid enough to not work with Canary and find away to keep Adam Chandler on the canvas for many years yet to come? Or would they be foolish enough to kill off yet another Chandler family member, much like they did with Stuart last spring.

Well it appears as if the twitter post was indeed accurate, as various soap mags and insiders are reporting that Canary will remain with ABC and AMC to fulfill his contract which does indeed end in March and at this point it does NOT appear that Canary will sign a new contract with the show. Many daytimers do commute to opposite coasts in order to tape their shows, but my dears they tend to have very grueling taping schedules that can span 12-14 hour days if not longer. I don’t blame Canary for choosing not to commute, but I cannot imagine Pine Valley without this silver haired fox. How long Adam will remain on our screens and his fate is the burning question at this very moment.  Since most daytime shows tape anywhere from 4-6 weeks in advance, even if Canary was to quit filming in March he could possibly be seen well into April and possibly May.

If this did indeed happen, could Canary’s departure play a part in the storylines being considered for May sweeps? We’ve seen our share of gloom and doom in Pine Valley over the years, so I do hope that the current writers would not kill off the character of Adam Chandler. However, Adam’s demise could “kick-off” what could be some potentially interesting storylines.

Adam’s death could bring Hayley, Mateo, Skye and perhaps some other absent members of the Chandler family back to town for a longer visit.  Could you imagine JR, Hayley, Skye and Colby taking sides and battling it out for control of Chandler Enterprises.  Which of these four would form an unlikely alliance, while the others looked out for number 1???

I say throw Annie in the mix and watch the fur fly even more. To what lengths would Adam’s children go to in order to keep Annie from sinking her claws further into the Chandler fortune? I love the bitchy, edgier side of Annie that we have been seeing lately, but she better watch out if she chooses to tango with Hayley and/or Skye because something tells me she would be on the losing end of this battle.

The Chandler children could also enlist the help of their cousin Ross (he is the son of Adam and Stuarts sister and Palmer Cortlandt). Since the show will soon be addressing Palmer’s death, Ross could come back to town to stake his claim to Cortlandt Electronics (along side Nina) and then merge it with Chandler Enterprises? This too could make for an interesting turn of events.

However, something tells me that the short term return of Julia Barr as Brooke might in part have something to do with the impending departure of David Canary. We know that Adam has changed his will, and if he does indeed pass away could Brooke become the sole heir to the Chandler fortune and the Chandler mansion. While I see Brooke looking out for JR, Colby, Hayley and Skye if this does indeed happen, something tells me that she would kick Annie to the curb.

I LOVE the thoughts of the show developing an Annie/Brooke feud, because she needs someone other than Erica to do battle with. Annie and Erica could always team up and feud with Brooke however.

Or perhaps Brooke and Adam fans will get their happy ending, if Brooke and Adam reunite and leave Pine Valley together and go off to see the world.  That way the door would always be open if one or both actors (and characters) ever wanted to return at a later date.

While I hope Adam’s death is not on the horizon (even though all indicators are pointing that way), I’m not sure how viewers would react to having the role recast.  For 27 years, Canary has become synonymous with Adam Chandler and let’s face it they’re some roles in daytime that should just simply not be recast.

Ohhh Mr. Canary we will miss you, but are praying and hoping that you and ABC can strike a deal to keep you around Pine Valley just a tad longer.  Pine Valley would not be the same without the silver haired fox!

Do you think David Canary will depart the show in March or will he try and reach a contract extension? How would you like to see Adam leave the show?? Would you accept a recast for Adam and if so which actor would you like to see recast in the role of Adam? Click on the email link below and send me your thoughts.

Until next time…. the “Children” have spoken

ALL MY CHILDREN

Now that Jackson is back in town would you like to see a reunion with Erica?

Yes- They’re soul mates and belong together. give me Jerica Now!
No- The ship has sailed on these two, test the water with others to see if a new pairing would click.
Who cares- Walt Willey is recurring anyways, these new writers will probably not use him enough to warrant a reunion with Erica.
