Did I miss a memo or something? I know I have not been living under
a rock for
the last year, but I did not realize that so many of
Hollywood’s hottest films were providing their fans with even more
sequels throughout the summer months.
We have Indy back on his quest for answers (honey and I missed this one
unfortunately), while Christian Bale is bringing his next edition of
the winged caped crusader to the big screen, in what will probably
be the summer and industries most anticipated and viewed sequel.
Heck, Brendan Frasier is even fighting Mummies again in August.
Everywhere I look, it seems as if writers are bound and
determined to draw viewers and the almighty dollar, holding their
breath that this years sequel will be just as if not more popular
than any other they’ve created. Well Brian Frons or someone at the
alphabet network must have caught wind of Hollywood’s plan and
decided to push the idea of a sequel. A sequel in daytime? Yes my
dears, you read that right and no yours truly has not been out in
the summer sun too long.
Long before it was announced that Rebecca Budig would be
returning to AMC as Greenlee, something tells me that Fronsie
already had the thoughts surrounding a certain sequel dancing around
in his head. And that sequel my dears is the one known as “Rylee.” Yes I get that Rebecca Budig and Cameron Mathison are good
friends,
and heck I am even a fan of the both of them. I also get that they
like working opposite one another and even appear to be having fun
in their scenes with one another. However, the one thing I just
can’t seem to figure out is where Brian Frons gets the impression
that viewers want to see a “Rylee” sequel?!
I know I don’t and most of the reader’s who email me on a
weekly basis (not to mention those readers that frequent the
plethora of message boards yours truly visits) are all opposed to a
“Rylee” reunion, but does Fronsie, Pratt or even Julie Hannan
Carruthers even care? Obviously not, because as we saw over the
last few weeks Ryan regained his memory and professes his love for
Greenlee, even saying that he has always loved her.
Ummm okay then Ryan, what does that mean for your wife
Annie? Did you love her or not. With the whispers of Melissa
Claire Egan’s impending departure from the show later this summer or
early this fall, those of us who are still tuning in are getting our
answer.
And if you ask me that is a shame. I might be in the minority
here, but I was one of the few viewers that seemed to enjoy the
“Ryannie” relationship, before B&E decided to showcase Annie losing
her marbles (they seem to have a penchant for writing nutty
characters by the name of Annie). Mathison and Egan appeared to have
a good time in their scenes with one another. I even found the
“Ryannie” marriage somewhat real, as they coped to deal with issues
surrounding their children, former lovers and even meddling family
members.
Not to mention how Mathison and Egan seemed to light up every
time they were put into scenes with one another. Ryan fell in love
with Annie after Greenlee did a Mexican Hat dance all over his
heart…so why are we to believe that all of a sudden when his memory
comes back that *Poof* he truly loves Greenlee, always has and that
she is his one true love.
Ummm hello, part of Ryan’s memory is obviously still missing as
he seems to have forgotten that his true love and soul mate is none
other than the late Gillian Andrassy. For those viewers that fought
tooth and nail for Gillian and Ryan to be together having Ryan
proclaim the Green butterfly as his true love is well…….a slap in the
face.
And let’s not forget that Greenlee’s true love was none other
than the presumed dead Leo DuPres, but all the writers seem to have
forgotten these two bits of information. Instead they become hell
bent on pulling out all stops to reunite these two.
But the question is why? “Rylee” the original never caught on
with viewers and unfortunately it appears as if the sequel is not
going to catch on either and why should it? Just because two
actors are real life friends and enjoy working with one another?
Supposedly that was part of the bait Fronsie used to hook Budig and
convince her to resign with the show.
I feel sorry for her! Why should I invest any time or
energy into “Rylee”: The Sequel, when it is obvious that should one
or both actors leave Rylee will over with once again.
Personally, I would rather see Pratt revisit the show’s history
by revisiting the uneasiness between Ryan and Jake Martin, which
resulted back when Gillian was on the canvas. Slowly intertwine
Beth Ehlers character Taylor into the mix, and you might just have a
must see quadrangle.
Better yet, bring Esta Terblanche or Josh Duhamel back (even if
just briefly) as new characters (not a back from the dead Leo or
Gillian) who show up on Ryan or Greenlee’s doorstep wanting
information about their late look-alike siblings. The show could
once again treat viewers to the love stories Gillian shared with
Ryan and Leo shared with Greenlee, while exploring new love stories
between these characters, as they begin to move into each other’s
orbit’s.
Alas, none of the above is happening and Greenlee will get her
chance at mommy hood as she helps Ryan raise his daughter Emma, and
perhaps the baby Annie is carrying at the moment. I am all for
recycling, but can someone please tell me how recycling this couple
will contribute to saving the planet?
