FIVE OF A KIND

Soaptown U.S.A. Asks Five Questions Of Your GH Favorites

KELLY MONACO

By: Tom Stacy

Soaptown USA:  You got off to a pretty rocky start during your first DANCING stint. Are you ready to revisit all this?
Kelly Monaco:  I remember [Judge] Bruno [Tonioli] said something about me looking like I had to be back in a “hospital,” and my GENERAL HOSPITAL fans went crazy.  They were like, “I can call my mom a bitch but you can’t [laughs], and now we’ll show you why.”  You know soap fans. They are loyal and dedicated.  They kept me in that competition.

Soaptown:  You then managed to turn that negative experience into a positive one.
Monaco [nods]:  I just remember that first episode being reamed out and thinking, “I’m really going to have to f---ing work now, aren’t I?”

Soaptown:  Were you surprised they wanted you back for the All Stars, or was it expected since you were the very first winner?
Monaco:  Whether or not they thought I was good enough or not, at least I guilted them into having me [laughs].  The producers felt like, “Oh, it’s our baby and she started everything out,” so there was some sort of guilty pleasure behind that [laughs]!

Soaptown:  Are you counting on the GH fans’ support?
Monaco:  I survived that show because of the fans!  The way the voting worked then is different than it works now — the audience held the percentage in lieu of a tie — and really what happened was it was tied but I won every week because of the audience.

Soaptown:  Well, you also came the farthest in such a short period of time.  Have you done any dancing since you walked away with the trophy?
Monaco:  I have not.  Drew [Lachey, season two winner] thinks he’ll have a hard time because he’s six years away.  I'm seven years gone [and] older.  So, yeah, it's going to be interesting.  It's going to be a lot of hard work, that's for sure.

Good luck, Kel!  We're rootin' for ya!
