GH CHRONICLES

Return to Sender

Ever want a character to vanish until we can get the real version?

I just knew that Sonny's "retirement" from the mob wouldn't last longer than about ten minutes. Too bad there wasn't an over/under - I would've bet the kitchen sink on Sonny quickly reverting to the power-trippy guy we're seeing now. Power is Sonny's drug of choice and Sonny without power makes for a very cranky boy. Using his "persuasive presence" to sway Crimson's distribution deal in Kate's favor is one thing but to continue issuing orders like he's reading off baseball stats is another. "What do you mean, YOUR office?" the grumpy ex-mobster demands of Jason, and that was after Sonny's cruel and frankly uncalled for verbal assault on Spinelli, which was not exactly making any waves of Sonny love crash over me. Mean, it was. Incredibly mean. So why make mention of any of this? Because I'll be blunt: Sonny needs to be placed back in his natural habitat - like yesterday. He's behaving like a total jackass right now and I can't stand to watch it.

And as one astute reader made mention of, what is the real point behind Sonny signing away his parental rights to his kids? A piece of paper changes nothing because, as the reader said, if push really came to shove for one of Sonny's enemies, the fact that he is no longer legally tied to Morgan (or Michael) quickly becomes irrelevant. In other words, they can still be targets because no document in the world is going to change the fact that he is still a father.

Then there is Carly's take on the situation. She does not see the fact that the same danger that surrounds Sonny also surrounds Jason, her best friend. Okay, I have to say it: These people are complete fools if they think this is actually going to work. Sign a few papers, get out of the mob (yeah, right) and all is well and right with the world, yes? I think not. It's nowhere near that simple. Sonny has emotional ties to Carly, the kids, Mike, etc., and if someone really wanted to paint his little red wagon, they would not let any pesky legalities that have been put in place stop them. Carly is just inviting the situation to remain dangerous by refusing to send Jason packing. She probably thinks Jason is Superman and nothing can touch him but how can that be, when Jason is not even sharing in his own son's upbringing - for the exact same reasons that drove Sonny to turn away from his kids. Good Lord. I'm beginning to think that everyone would be safer is Sonny had just stayed where he was. If you look at the really big picture, Sonny's exit from the mob may ultimately end up having little effect. That and the fact that the control freak is driving me crazy at the moment - he has nothing to control.

And speaking of control freaks, Lulu needs to lose this penchant for running around Port Charles and demanding that everyone bow to her way of thinking. If her planets are not aligned properly, she can't help herself: She commands Sonny, Jason, or whoever to do her bidding until her romantic Johnny boat has righted itself. That's not only incredibly irritating, but if she actually thinks her words are going to have any real impact, then she's off her rocker too. "You have to do this for Johnny or believe that about Johnny," she insists to whomever finds themselves unfortunate enough to be trapped in her tractor beam. Wrong, little girl. For someone who keeps protesting that she is an adult (and a Spencer), you're sure not showing much of that chutzpah that befits a daughter of Luke. Lulu's "my way or the highway" attitude is almost admirable - until she presents it to someone that probably thinks she should still be playing with Barbies, that is - then the punch quickly goes out of it.

Moving along further, I see Sam is still looking around for her self-esteem. The conversation with Liz was surprisingly mature and rational and I was actually staring in awe. That is, until Sam once again reverted to her patented Woe-is-Me mindset. Didn't think so? Her words proved it: She mentions that Lucky would drop her in a second and return to Liz if Liz were so inclined - said in a sighing, resigned tone of voice. If that's the case Sam, then tell Lucky to get lost. Why settle for being his afterthought? Have you placed yourself so low on the totem pole that you don't think you have the qualities to make Lucky (or any man) stay with you because he wants to? Stop kicking yourself around and get with the program. What's done is done and the past is the past. You're not going to have any kind of future with Lucky simply because you don't believe you can. Have some faith in Lucky and most of all, in the person you see in the mirror.
