Past tense, future perfect, or,
Is there Call Waiting on the Sax-o-phone?

I have to say, when I opened up this little challenge and invited readers to tell me about their favorite ABC daytime couples, past, present, or maybe future, I expected to be deluged with GH couples. Luke & Laura, Audrey & Steve, Frisco & Felicia, Anna and Robert Scorpio... These were the folks who invented the whole idea of Supercouples.  I was not disappointed. Those GH fans certainly know how to put their email where their mouths are!

But the big vote-getter was somewhat surprising to me. Next week I’ll take on the runner-up, since there were so many votes for them, too, and considering the volume of mail generated by this whole contest, the margin of victory was barely a sliver. But this week is all about the couple that got the biggest bonanza of love letters. This week is all about... (Drum roll, please!)

Jax and Skye!

For all the folks who say Jax and Skye have no fan following, I must say that my mail does not support that conclusion. The Sax fans are out in full force! And they know how to wield those pens, too!

On the subject of the Wannabe White Knight and his once-lawfully-wedded wife, my readers were big on the “elegance,” “class,” and “intelligence” of their favorite duo. They most often noted that they loved the complexity and “adult” nature of this couple, that a strong story of “forgiveness and redemption” remained to be told between two people who had been through so much, and that Jax and Skye bring out the best in each other, with words about how Skye brings out the romantic, decisive, dashing side of Jax, and he brings out the softer, more compassionate side of her. Their fans say that she gives him some extra IQ points and a, uh, certain manliness, while he gives her a rapid pulse and more of a heart.

Again and again, these Sax fans talked about how much they miss the incredible passion Skye and Jax generated, with that steamy Sax wedding night a familiar theme.. As Jenny tells us, “Just a touch was enough to burn the skin.”  Nicely put, Jenny!

“Is there a classier, edgier, more beautiful, more passionate twosome on GH?” asks Karen. “NO! They're too intelligent for their own good, sometimes overanalyzing a situation but also proving that intelligence is no guard against acting crazy for love. They're both smart in business but oftentimes at a loss on how to ‘close the deal’ in love. Even though they're apart for the moment, the love that grew slowly out of lessons hard-learned is still there under the surface. Here's hoping they find their way back to each other. Their passion for each other is too wonderful to be denied for long!”

“I really miss the wonderful chemistry between Ingo Rademacher and Robin Christopher,” says Lindsay. “I know love scenes are difficult for actors, so they must really have worked to pull off their scenes the way they did. GH has been much the worse without their explosive, romantic, fantastic love scenes to look forward to.”

Beth noted that, “Whether flirting or fighting, making love or making war, this couple has always sizzled, thanks to the explosive chemistry and mesmerizing talent of portrayers Ingo Rademacher and Robin Christopher.”  She adds, “A love like theirs doesn't simply slip away; on the contrary, despite the most daunting challenges, it will last a lifetime.”  This sentiment was echoed by Marina, who quoted from the Sax playbook. “Their motto is ‘Together Forever, No Matter What,” and that is exactly what I would like to see — a couple so passionate they can’t keep their hands off each other, but so headstrong, they keep driving each other crazy, too. I’d like to see Jax and Skye keep working hard and playing hard and finding all the reasons in the world to fall back into each other’s arms.”

And then there’s Fleur d’Lis (who probably gets the award for the most intriguing name among my correspondents).  “Skye is now the Queen of my Heart,” Fleur tells us, “and I pray she soon resumes that role in Jax's life as well. I waited for years for Brenda to love Jax unconditionally, to be completely devoted to him, and to put him first above all others as he did her. What a surprise it was to me to realize that Brenda is not that woman for Jax, but instead it is Skye!

Fleur continues, “It was Brenda who invoked Jax's heartfelt phrase, ‘Nobody Leaves,’ only to break that promise a second time and leave Jax broken-hearted again. Like Miranda, Brenda let Jax believe she was dead for four years. And like Miranda, Brenda returned on Jax's wedding night, ostensibly to rescue him from Alkazar but in reality to selfishly destroy his life so she could once again reign on the throne of his heart, torment Sonny, and tease Jason. It is no wonder Jax is confused, but I believe with all my heart that Skye is the one true love of Jax's life, not Brenda! Skye changed because of Jax. This gorgeous, fiery, courageous, brilliant, glamorous, sophisticated woman — Skye — was the only woman able to capture ELQ and present it to Jax on a silver platter. She's grown incredibly because of Jax's love. I believe Skye would tilt windmills, slay dragons, scale thorny castle walls for her sweet prince! Now, she must save Jax from himself. I'm convinced Jax is denying his love for Skye because he does not believe he deserves her and to spare her any more pain.”

I find that last bit very interesting. It’s not something I noticed myself, but she’s right. The White Knight has met a woman who would actually slay dragons for him. We saw that when Jax was paralyzed and Skye sat next to his bed, begging for a chance to help him. Refreshing, isn’t it? But, of course, Jax needs to let her be his dragon slayer, which he hasn’t so far. Could be very interesting. Personally, I’d pay to see that happen in Port Charles, the land of weak, whiny women. Stand up, ladies! Save the guys for a change!

But back to Skye and Jax and the wedding fans just can’t forget.  “I have seen dozens of weddings on GH,” continues Fleur, “but Jax & Skye's wedding was the most elegant, charming wedding ever. I loved everything about it: Skye's exquisite gown, Jax's tux, the beautiful church and minister, the symbolic return of Skye's lost necklace, the intimacy of only close family and friends, the glorious flowers, the serendipitous storm responsible for the loss of electricity, the incandescent glow of candlelight, the irresistible groom unabashedly in love, and the smitten, breathless bride undeniably, unmistakably marrying the man of her dreams. At Jax & Skye's next wedding, I want GH to give these two terrific actors the storyline and equal time they deserve. I want them to allow Jax & Skye's story to unfold with depth, explanation of their feelings, thoughts, and actions over the last year. I want Jax to be vindicated for having said, ‘I don't!’ to Brenda.”

And she concludes, “I want the story of Jax & Skye to be the romance of a lifetime. I want Jax & Skye to remarry in that charming church in front of all of their friends and family. I want Skye to have Jax's child.  I want Skye and Jax to build their own empire to eclipse ELQ and the Cassadines!  For once, I want Skye, the Queen of Hearts, and Jax, the King of Hearts, to rule Port Charles.”

Thanks for working my name into your arguments, ma belle Fleur! This Queen of Hearts enjoyed the homage.

This week you’ve heard from fans still smitten with the idea of Skye and Jax. Next week — more GH couples tributes from the other set of fans who set my mailbox on fire. Who will it be? Can you guess? Tune in next week to find out!
