Fangs for the Memories, or
Port Charles, Post Mortem?

Now that we all know that “Port Charles” is no more at the end of this arc, we also know that none of the PC couples, immortal, other-worldly, or otherwise, have a future. I’ve lived through the cancellations of several soaps, with my beloved “Ryan’s Hope” and “Santa Barbara” at the top of the list, so I feel for the diehard PC fans with the loss of their soap and especially the loss of their favorite couples.

But that’s the reality of the soap opera form — whether the show stays on or not, every couple goes eventually. They can ride off into the sunset together, as Luke and Laura did for one of their exits, they can be backburnered into oblivion, which is pretty much what happened to Joe and Ruth Martin, or they can get blown up, stuck in a coma, killed off or sent to the loony bin, which has happened to too many halves of too many couples for me to elaborate.

I’m afraid there’s no such as Happily Ever After when it comes to daytime romances. But that doesn’t mean our favorite couples won’t live on in our memories. Once they strike that chord, once we adopt them as ours forever, they’re not going anywhere, whether it’s just in a word or phrase or song that reminds us, or an eternal loop on the VCR.

When I asked you to write me about your favorite couples, we didn’t know that the show was on the chopping block. Lots of couples were mentioned, from Caleb to Olivia to Jack, from Kevin to Eve to Ian to Lucy and Scott, with lots of very nice comments for each of the permutations and combinations. I have to say, it seems churlish, in light of the show’s departure, to pick winners and losers. Let’s face it — now that “Port Charles” is over, they’re all winners and all losers. But four couples emerged as the most memorable to the largest number of readers, and here are some collected memories from viewers who loved their couples on “Port Charles,” who are still hoping that when the lights go out on the show, they will get a happy ending. Who are the Big Four of Port Charles? Read on.

Cokie waxes rhapsodic about her faves, Rafe and Alison: I just love their chemistry. They sparkle when they are together. I love the way their love blossomed from a friendship into this amazing romance. Rafe always takes care of Alison and protects her. He saved her life and she saved his life — it was like they knew what they had to do. I love the way they complete each other.”

Jessica agrees. “Rafe and Alison have been through so much just to be together, and their love has survived and actually become stronger. The writers keep throwing roadblocks in front of them and they find a way to survive. I remember one scene where there were no words spoken, but their facial expressions said it all. When Rafe & Alison are onscreen their eyes sparkle and their eyes light up the screen.”

MJ Connolly spoke for a lot of Rafe and Alison fans when she said, “They are so extraordinary, dripping with chemistry and oozing sweet sexiness....I love them to death. So that's my vote and I'm sticking to it!”

Thanks, MJ!

But Alison’s other pairing was also extremely popular with the PC fans who wrote to me. Says Jillian, “I feel that Jamal and Alison are not only one of the best couples to ever be on Port Charles, they are also one of the best couples to ever be on daytime. The way they were brought together was so real and emotional. They were two people, thrown together by fate. As hard as they tried to fight their feelings, they couldn't. They knew each other better than anyone else in the entire world.”

And Lisa couldn’t agree more. “My all-time favorite couple on Port Charles is Jamal Woods and Alison Barrington. They broke all the rules when they got together. They didn't just magically fall in love. They were using each other for their own reasons when they first met. They couldn't stand one another but as they got to know each other a beautiful friendship came out of it. From the friendship came a passionate love from within.  They saw each other for who they truly were. Alison turned her back on her family for the man she loved. They went into business together with their two best friends. Jamal was willing to go to jail for a crime he didn't commit because he loved her that much.”

Next up — a duo that never really got together. But fans like Desi still cared enough to write in. Desi herself cared enough to start the “Chris and Eve Net.” She says, “I followed the pairing of Kevin and Lucy over to the new show after having watched that super couple go through many trials and tribulations on General Hospital. Along with Kevin and Lucy, I also found something new and exciting in Port Charles that became my obsession over the years. I found new interns Chris Ramsey and Eve Lambert. These two characters had enough chemistry to set the screen on fire. Along with the blackmail, the sarcasm and the witty remarks, there was a remarkable repartee between the two characters. When they shared their first kiss in the Recovery Room at Julie Devlin's welcome home party, I was hooked. These two roomies and martini buds created a new super couple in the making. They were oozing with chemistry and fun.  They had a genuine friendship, an unspoken love and a sense of ease that just made their scenes shine and fun to watch.  They had a real connection that didn't need any supernatural influence. Over the years we Chris-and-Eve fans were taunted and teased by the amazing potential between these two characters and while there was always some kind of build leading to what seemed to be the next level between them, there was always something in the way being a roadblock for them.”

Ah, yes. The frustration of the fan who never quite gets the couple she wants. “Time after time we fans watched Eve move on to yet another Port Charles hunk who clearly was wrong for her,” Desi argues. “The Ian-and-Eve romance came at a time when Chris was most logically the man for Eve. During Time in a Bottle, I yet again hoped that the writers were finally getting on track with Chris and Eve when he'd proposed to her. There was so much emotion and intensity between Nolan North and Julie Pinson on the show and they truly had quite a following as the fans waited almost five years for Eve to finally wake up and face the inevitable that Chris was in love with her. Time and time again we'd seen the moment arise only to watch it slip away, but we still never gave up hope.”

Desi spoke for many Chris-and-Eve fans when she said that even Eve’s death hadn’t crushed her spirit. “Chris and Eve fans are still waiting and hoping for the return of Eve to be with her REAL soulmate Chris.”

So we’ve seen death-defying star-crossed lovers Rafe & Alison, the kids from opposite words who found each other in Alison & Jamal, and the sparring partners who almost but never quite had it all in Chris & Eve. Who’s left? How about the couple that started it all for “Port Charles”? How about Doc and his lady Lucy, parents to Sigmund the duck, always a bit crazy, always a little off-the-wall, but also perfect for each other in some unique way.

I’m going to close this column with Tammy’s comments about Lucy and Kevin, because I think they’re very eloquent and they really define this show for me. When it ends, I’d like to see “Port Charles” be more about hearts than fangs, more about the people and the characters and real, heartfelt emotion than splashy stunts and supernatural feats.

Tammy writes: “From the moment they met (and yes, that's the moment I fell in love with them as a couple), they defined chemistry. They  were the classic opposites attracts couple on GH and when they hopped over to PC (and I happily hopped over with them), they together and apart became the heart and soul of Port Charles. Even with all the horrendous changes the writers have put both of them through in the last year, especially Kevin who deserved so much better, theirs is still the love story I root for. Somewhere deep inside, where Kevin still is, Kevin loves Lucy the same way he has for almost a decade now. And somewhere deep inside Lucy, although she truly does love Ian, is the part of her heart that has and will always belong to Kevin. I still have hopes that Port Charles will end as it began, with Kevin and Lucy together (and, if miracles do happen, Lucy pregnant with Kevin's child).”

Thank you, Tammy! I hope you get your wish.

Au revoir, Port Charles! You will be missed.
