First
things first, I need to give a huge thanks to whoever was
responsible for Monday and Tuesday’s episodes of Guiding Light this
past week because I loved them. I actually rewound certain scenes
and watched them again, they were that good! Of course a big reason
that these episodes worked so well was because of the past writers
who clearly defined the characters of Reva and Josh, as well as to
Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman who brought such warmth to these
episodes. Even if you were never a fan of Reva and Josh, who had to
love the recreation of their first wedding because it was just a
heartfelt story, full of insight into these characters as well as
moving current story along at a nice pace.
From the moment
that Josh and Reva saw Jolene, the actress playing Reva on the boat
in the lake I knew that Guiding Light wasn’t going to screw this up.
They wisely used flashbacks, albeit silent ones, to help build the
momentum of the wedding. For anyone who actually saw the real
wedding it was especially thrilling. Josh and Reva’s wedding at
Cross Creek is an amazing piece of history for Guiding Light. It
was perfect from beginning to end, a huge payoff for the viewers as
well as the characters. And this recreation, which paid homage to
the first one, will also go down in history as one of Guiding Lights
best moments.
There were some
false moments like the actress playing Sarah Shayne being so
motherly to Cassie, the absence of Hawk and Reva’s siblings, but as
a whole I loved the H.B look a like as well as Billy having trouble
with the actor who was playing him. I also LOVED that Cassie and
Josh broke up. I was dancing like a guest at the wedding when that
scene played. It was about time that GL came to its senses and
realized that this couple was a big old snooze fest. I’m not sure
where this all leaves Cassie, and most of the time I could care less
what happens to her, but I think Cassie being really angry at Reva
is a good start. I also feel that Cassie should be a lot angrier at
Josh then she is. Who knows, maybe this will shake up Cassie and
either change the
character for the better or help her make that big
decision to leave Springfield for good.
I also love how
for now Reva chose Jeffrey. What an interesting twist. I also
liked how Josh paid Reva a visit and told her that he will wait for
her as long as it takes. This trio sounds promising. It’s a story
that GL could get a lot of miles out of, as long as they don’t screw
it up.
Since Monday and
Tuesday were so promising and well done, I had high hopes for the
rest of the week, but I was wrong. I’ll admit there were some
bright moments like finally seeing Alexandra again, but most of the
show was just so-so for me.
I’m not sure if
GL was going for laughs or dramatic flair with the revelation that
Remy is the father of Ava’s baby. I mean it was quite campy. Ava’s
reaction was weird and underplayed, in fact her whole response to
the whole situation has been underwhelming. I know Michelle Ray
Smith is leaving the show and that she is going to suffer from post
partum depression, yet Ava didn’t really have a full out dramatic
revelation of her own. Bill and Remy sure had them, yet Ava’s was
just not there. GL also wasted a potential awesome scene between Ava and Vanessa by just cutting it
short with hardly any words
exchanged. I would have loved to have seen Vanessa protect her son
and coldly make Ava promise to never take away Max from Bill. It
could have sent chills to Ava and to the viewer, but alas GL choose
the campy moment of Lizzie laughing at the fact that Remy is the
father then showcase Vanessa in all her glory.
The reason I
could care less about this story is the fact that Ava is history,
Remy is dull, and I feel GL has bigger things for Bill. This is
like a tiny little bump in his story. The rumor of Max dying and
Bill waging war on Remy and Dinah for helping Remy is probably true,
because I surly don’t see a custody trial between Remy and Bill
taking place.
If Remy was a
full fledged thought out character, maybe a custody battle would
work. With Olivia, Lizzie and Mel in the mix it could be
interesting, yet Remy is not a character the audience roots for at
every turn. He is underplayed by both the show and the actor
and the character comes across as just plain dull. He is
forced. GL could have given Remy a lot more depth after
Tammy’s death, yet the chose to keep the actor and keep Remy as one
note.
Plus the buildup
for the entire story has been so rushed that all the dramatic
moments have just fallen flat. Not every character has been
involved, especially Olivia. Also missing is Coop and Ashlee, a big
part of Ava’s past. Hopefully GL will end this mess
as
quickly has they started it.
Another cold as
ice moment is Alan. I don’t know why but his guru storyline is just
so boring. Add a boring Beth and a bored Marcy Rylan as Lizzie and
the scenes this week involving these characters were fast-forward
worthy. I adore Marcy Rylan but she seems bored with Lizzie these
days. She only sparked up when she was playing opposite Jordan
Clarke. Maybe I’m just imagining things but I feel we won’t see her
as Lizzie for much longer. I think she is done with the long
commute to New Jersey.
