Happy
Holidays and a very Happy New Year to you all. I’ve been on vacation
this week skiing, having a blast, but wanted to take this opportunity
to tell you all what a kick it’s been for me musing together about our favorite soap.
From vampires and slayers to angels, witches, avatars and back again from SECRETS to NAKED EYES,
PORT
CHARLES hit its stride this year with its telenova style, 13 week fast paced
story arcs. I realize not everyone is a fan of the book format as
they’re called but no one can argue that this year in particular
PORTCHARLES
never failed to engage us in some way whether we liked it or not.
Never failed to thrill us, move us, entertain us, shock us, surprise
us, infuriate us, arouse us, disgust us, sadden us, touch us and wrap
us its warm embrace when we needed it most thanks to a beautifully
portrayed character named Rafe and a beautifully written storyline,
showing us miracles can indeed continue to happen. PORT
CHARLES’unique reality,
its amazingly talented ensemble cast, the wonderful way it blends
classic soap themes…romance, mystery, intrigue, deception and
betrayal, with its supernatural sensibilities makes it the most
exciting, fun, passionate 30 minutes of pure drama on daytime. The
production values – the look of the show, the lighting, the sets, the
wardrobe (well maybe that one is open to debate) is unlike anything
daytime has ever seen and along with the cast of characters, sets this
show apart.
PORT CHARLES keeps us tuning in day after day
even when we’re ready to throw bricks at the screen and provides me
with endless fodder for my Musings.
When PORT
CHARLES succeeds it has a natural grace and flow and definite kind
of logic, never for a minute surrendering its humanity, the one
element, that like a sprinkling of Rafe’s dear departed angel dust,
sparks magic. It’s that inherent humanity that makes this show
believable, lets you invest in the characters and the situations they
find themselves in, no matter how ridiculous, allows you to identify
with their timeless struggle for love, truth and belonging… while of
course at the same time slaying evil forces, battling split
personalities and addictions of all sorts, braving the winds of
change, i.e. actors coming and going, and the nasty ratings game as
TPTB try to make up their minds about exactly who is watching this
show.
My thanks
for the tremendous support you’ve shown… for me, the show and
for indulging my Musings here. It has been one helluva fun ride so
far. More interviews are coming and please, send me your suggestions
and thoughts, I would love to hear them. And continue to send me
your insights into the show and feedback each week. I’ll try to
always keep it fun and thought provoking. My opinions, likes and
dislikes may not be yours, I’d like to hear about that too. While I am
obviously pro PORT CHARLES and that fact is usually reflected in my
weekly comments, I’m generally not blind, at least I like to think I’m
not. The show, like everything else in life, has its problems…it has
jumped the shark as they say over the course of the year, experiencing
story fatigue more than once with stories that get too one sided at
times and woeful under-utilization of the talented core cast – Nolan
North being the most blatant example. But in the grand scheme of all
things soap, PORT CHARLES is the only drama I am still willing
to commit to on a daily basis, no matter how hard TPTB try to screw it
up, intentionally or not.
Max’s Musings but more importantly keep watching PORT CHARLES.
Keep holding the romance, wonderful characters and irresistible
fantasy close to your heart. Enjoy this little marvel of a soap for
all its worth, flaws and all. I do. To the best ensemble cast in
daytime who make the magic happen day in and day out, thank you.
A toast to
2003, may it be a year filled with love and peace, health and
happiness.
