Thank you for your responses to my best and worst column - oh wait, I
didn't get any responses at all! Nothing. (insert sad face here) So I'm
guessing you either hated it or you didn't read it, LOL, but it's all
good, all good. Kind of like this show, eh?
We knew it was going to happen and we still tuned in with unblinking eyes:
Days has killed off legacy character Mickey Horton, and Maggie made the
horrific discovery on Friday's episode. I have to tell you that it was
tough for me to watch. Unlike a lot of other deaths on this show, this one
is very true to life (not to mention permanent) and that's probably why it
affected me so much. Hope comes in and realizes that Maggie is just
sitting there. If you hadn't known she was going to find Mickey dead, you
would've wondered where her description of events was going.
But it was
still incredibly sad to watch and listen to. Maggie was describing how
excited Mickey was about the cruise they were taking and going on and on,
then suddenly, "I tried CPR," and that's when Hope realized what was going
on. Maggie pointed out that she volunteers at the hospital and knows when
it's too late to help someone, and some fans were wondering why she just
sat there instead of calling the proper authorities. I can tell you why.
She was in shock. Calling an ambulance would've made the loss of Mickey
even more of a finality to her and she probably didn't want to face that
just yet. She even told Hope that she just couldn't go back upstairs
again.
I can also tell you that any reaction to death is perfectly normal, there
is no right or wrong way to grieve. What seems morbid to some gives
comfort to others. When Mickey was being taken out on the gurney, Maggie
stopped them and noticed that he wasn't wearing his wedding ring, so she
placed it on his finger and then let him be taken away. Now personally, I
thought that was a little morbid; okay not so much morbid as wondering how
she could've found the strength to do that. See I told you this was all
having an affect on me. Other fans felt that the scene was a touching
moment and it helped them connect to Maggie and to Mickey. I thought it
would've been better for Maggie if she hadn't seen him being taken out
because there are some things you shouldn't have to see, but soaps are
about playing the drama and the emotional impact. This is a huge story for
Suzanne Rogers (Maggie) and to be honest, it's great that Days is giving a
veteran character a meaty story.
The other Salem happening that had my attention was when Carly was trapped
in the elevator with Vivian. Viv seemed to thoroughly enjoy Carly's pure
panic as her claustrophobia set it. We got a real sense of Carly's
blinding fear of enclosed spaces, brought on by Vivian burying her alive,
and I must say if I had been Carly, I probably would've lost it too.
Carly, who prides herself on being strong and independent, is not so
strong after all. She has a very real (and history appropriate) phobia and
I thought that was kind of interesting to see. Unfortunately Vivian was
also a witness to her weakness and I shudder to think of how she will use
that weakness to her advantage.
