UPDATED 1-25-2010
SALEM
PLACE
Marvelous!

The> only word that fits for the
three M's of Salem.

I apologize for not updating last week. You know how it is, if your needed
at work, the extra money always comes in handy. And luckily for me, that
has been happening a lot lately. Now let's get to those three M's, who
made my viewing all the more sweeter.
Melissa:
First off, how wonderful was it to see Lisa Trusel as Melissa again? I
think it was pretty much unanimous that she be brought back onto the
canvas on a more permanent basis - can never have too many Hortons!
Especially one that could possibly go toe to toe with Carly over Nathan
and Melanie and could provide a support system for Hope and for Maggie. To
say nothing of the fact that Trusel is still a sheer joy to watch! As for
Mickey's goodbye, I think the show did the best it could under the
circumstances. Bill and Sarah were referred to as if they were there and
so was Alice. As much as Alice was needed for the story, we have to accept
that she is a character we may never see again due to the fact that
Frances Reid is no longer well enough to appear on the show. Sarah is a
character that was never really fleshed out story-wise, so I think
bringing on a temporary actress to play her wouldn't have hurt. Bill
would've been a lot harder to recast, so I'll settle for the mentions of
him even though we didn't see him. All in all, fans pretty much agreed
that the one past character that needed to be present, aside from Alice,
was Melissa, and the show delivered.
Maggie:
Suzanne Rogers was awesome as always as a grieving Maggie. I could see
that Maggie would've probably fallen apart right in front of our eyes if
her family had not been there to support her. Every character surrounding
Maggie was right on point and it made a very stressful situation even more
real. I loved the fact that Maggie was wearing the red shoes - not just
any red shoes, but THE red shoes, the one Mickey gave her to encourage her
when she couldn't walk. In a symbolic way, those red shoes are still
Mickey's way of encouraging her, only this time to help her walk without
him beside her, to remind her of that strength and gumption that he always
saw in her.
Melanie:
Now I have to tell you that Melanie has definitely turned around my way of
thinking. When she first arrived in Salem, I couldn't stand the mouthy
brat. i could see her heading down the same road as Chelsea. But as with
Chelsea, the show is really making me like Melanie the days. Molly
Burnett's scenes with Crystal Chappell have been no less than delicious -
I adore Burnett's snarky line delivery. As we know, Melanie is Carly's
secret daughter, and I'm looking forward to the fallout of that reveal.
What I'm not looking forward to is who Melanie's father could be,
especially since it's been hinted that the daddy in question could be
Daniel. Let's deal with one parent at a time. Anyway, Melanie just flat
out doesn't like Carly and Carly's interest in her is giving Melanie the
creeps - and it's making for some very entertaining scenes.
Victor encourages Vivian to leave Melanie alone since she is engaged to
marry Phillip but Vivian will not be deterred. Not for nothing have I
wondered just exactly where this hatred of Carly is coming from. So she
killed Vivian's beloved nephew Lawrence. Okay, but did Vivian ever stop to
think about why Carly killed him? Can she not accept the fact that
Lawrence was an abusive jerk? It almost makes Vivian's view of Carly very
narrow because she can't or won't accept any circumstances, she only sees
the end result and that's the fact that Lawrence is dead because of Carly.
Now Vivian is determined to hurt Carly by way of Melanie and, to me, that
makes even less sense. Melanie is an innocent in all this, and she's
engaged to Phillip, someone Vivian adores. Did Vivian stop to think that
Phillip would be hurt if something were to happen to Melanie? The fact
that Vivian can only see her revenge on Carly and nothing else is a little
bit on the frustrating side.
